If you are able to volunteer, I am ready for your help! Please be sure all of your paperwork is in order with the office, and then email me. I prefer regularly occurring, dependable volunteer hours, because this is when I can really put you to work! However, if you are only available occasionally, or irregularly, I can work with that too, and I completely understand and appreciate all the help I can get! Please email me at least 24 hours in advance of when you'd like to come in to help, so I can be sure to have work ready for you. Thank you for helping at Firwood!
Conferences are coming up! If you signed up through Signup Genius, you will receive an email reminder a day or two before your scheduled conference time. If you signed up with me via paper, I will likely send you a reminder a day or two before your scheduled time.
Upcoming week:
Thursday night: Firwood Family Reading Night 6:00 to 7:00 in Firwood Library. We will be sharing various online reading resources, and families will have the opportunity to explore different websites and ebooks. We will have surprises and books to share, too! Please come dressed in a costume of the future!
Friday during the day: Black Light Fun Run in school gym. Please help your child to remember to wear as much white and neon-colored clothing as possible! Each child will get one glow necklace, but you are welcome to send them with more.
You can see upcoming events any time you like by clicking here, or clicking on the "Ongoing Calendar" tab above any time. I keep it as current as I can!
Language Arts:
We will be continuing our study of science articles, working to discern fact from fiction, identifying the plot of a story, and comparisons (compare is to see how things are the same, contrast is to see how they are different).
We will also be learning more about verbs, studying new spelling words, and working on publishing our scary stories.
Math:
Sums of equal numbers (if the sum is 6, what are the two addends? 3 and 3 of course!); review and practice of equal groups, arrays, repeated addition, etc.
Content area studies (Science):
Animals and their adaptations, habitats, predator vs. prey, behavior, etc.
Week in review:
Language Arts:
Science articles, fact vs. opinion, making inferences, plot (beginning, middle, end); using a dictionary (ABC order, parts of an entry in a dictionary); syllabication of words; helping verbs. We continued to work on our scary stories.
Math:
Arrays (organized equal groups) to show repeated addition; equal groups story problems; and lots and lots of basic fact practice. Here are some basic fact practice worksheets to print and practice at home (your second grader should be able to tell you which ones they're currently practicing), and here are some suggestions on different ways to practice basic facts at home.
Content area studies (science):
We continued to learn about animals, specifically through the lens of "discovering" more about their invented critters. On Friday, we focused on the different ways animals move.
Other:
In the computer lab, we visited Sheppard Software, a great free resource for learning games.
Finally, here are two graphs tracking our homework return for September and October. I hope your family is helping us reach our daily goal of at least 20 students turning in homework each day! Thank you for helping your child build scholarly habits!
| Here's September's: not too shabby! |
| Here's October's so far; we haven't met our goal as much as we did in September :( |
