Spring Break Update

We're already at spring break!

Reading
We are working our way through some Oregon History, and learning a lot about why people moved west; who moved west, and who was displaced by the emigrants; and what life was like on the Oregon Trail and in Oregon.  Sandy and the wider area are FULL of Oregon history, and I hope you all get a chance to visit/explore some of it over spring break.

Math
We have finished up with fractions and decimals, and are moving on to perimeter and area.

Writing
We have been writing shorter pieces across a range of topics, authors' purposes, and audiences, generally drawing inspiration from our Oregon history.

Spelling
We have been focusing on Greek and Latin roots.  Please be sure to visit the Spelling Words tab above for the most current spelling word list.

State testing
State testing is coming up in May, and we are beginning to review and prepare for that.  Please support Firwood's efforts in doing our best by encouraging your student to do their best; being sure they eat a quality breakfast and get enough sleep; and that they understand that while it is nothing to stress over, it is something to be taken seriously.

Field trip
I received everyone's permission slips and have contacted all volunteer chaperones.  It will be a great field trip on Friday, April 6 to Philip Foster Farm in Eagle Creek.

Spring break homework
It was sent home as a hard copy yesterday, was emailed as an attachment yesterday, and is available here as a Google doc as well.  Thank you for supporting your fourth grader's learning, helping them establish scholarly habits, and reinforcing the importance of responsibility.  There is also a reading log attached for students who are working on earning their last Book It! pizza for the year.  Reading is not optional, the reading log is.  In April, students who complete their weekly reading log will be entered into a drawing for free movie passes.

We read and then presented on different aspects of the Lewis and Clark expedition.

We read outside and enjoyed the sunshine.

We hosted Mr. Funk, Sandy's mountain man, who told us more about Sandy's role in Oregon history.
